This striking landscape opens into the psyche, scaling our humanness in the face of such an event that lies sharp at your feet. It’s easy to see this landscape in Paleolithic terms, massaging the primal memory inherent in this terrain. Collecting rocks has been a method of connecting to the earth since I was very small. I remember excavating crystals and special stones along walks and keeping them like little magical allies in my pocket and on my bedside. I remember being deeply struck by these black rocks years ago, arriving in New Mexico, and thinking I must make something. There are miles of these cryptic land formations of strewn lava fields broken by wind and time, hardly accessible for cacti and ‘goat heads’ - sharp burrs that scratch a life out of this hardened place. The individual stones seem to carry the story of this vastness of time and space. They have an intrinsic story and weighted power that culls a sense of geologic time. So by the accounts of modern science, we are carbon star structures and our jewelry is made from collided neutron stars.[1] (http://www.space.com/21995-gold-origins-neutron-star-collisions.html) It is a cosmological factor of science, in a rationally driven culture. A culture that seems to have lost the capacity to design and communicate through time and space as early man has clearly proven to be quite capable of. Illuminating certain facets or lines within the rocks by gilding with 24k gold, outlines this power and activates these sculptures as talismans. Sanskrit is a language of seed syllables. Each bindu (seed) of the word has a specific vibration/resonance that is conjured in sound. The power of the name and the sound resonate in meaning and in space, creating an actual wave pattern of communication, a coded signal sent into the ether. This is Jappa, reciting a mantra and repetition of sounds that sets a karmic wheel of transformation into motion. This is the power of prayer. Rulan Tangen was given the opportunity to inform her creative process via the Grand Canyon Trust, and their group of native wisdom holders and activists. Last fall, there was a meeting and private council at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico with Tangen, Dancing Earth and the emissaries sent by the Grand Canyon Trust to speak about the world – modern reality and traditions. Their intention was to get to the heart of what messages need to be communicated at this time though dance and creative action. The recordings from this meeting became the basis of the soundtracks in this work; bringing these ideas and conversations as a ‘seed’ for both the choreography and the message of the work; hopefully seeding the audience to feel motivated to protect the earth. Additionally, in the face of climate change, Tangen selected the Indigenous Women’s council proclamation at the Climate Change Summit, Paris 2015, as a basis for a new dance piece and audio track. We ask you to take a stand with us against resource extraction, fracking, fossil fuels, nuclear energy and weapons, and genetic engineering of our food. We ask that you stand for women’s rights, indigenous people’s rights and the rights of mother earth. Shot with a drone at Ghost Ranch, the magical land speaks for herself. The multilayered red earth, expansive views, epic rock formations and the veins of the arroyos show the earth filled with rampant, vital, beauty. The dancers become mythical beings in this landscape bridging time, allowing the ancestors to speak through them. The deer and her deft pose of grace,epitomizes beauty in her alertness, the guide between here and there, and beyond. The serpent in her supple trance, invites us to shed our ego, purge our selfish tendencies - to rise with seduction to meet transformation. The feminine elementis intrinsic to the form of the bowl, the vessel, the offering. Splayed open, the vessel is the container, the carrier, the open form - even in emptiness the bowl holds space. The kaliyuga is this destructive age we find ourselves in; a time of imbalance, inequality and chaos. To find beauty in this time seems akin to creating an offering,a sacred space of remembering, reshaping and re-evaluating. The “added value” of 23K gold to the sacred antler or the 3,000 year old lava stone embellishes the story; driving the ideas of value and time to collide in the Kaliyuga as an offering. Imagine the smells of the fire smoke, the offerings of camphor placed in the fire, and the dreamy scent of jasmine adorning the women‘s hair. As I have been exploring the elements through my work, I found it extraordinary to see a whole community bowing to the basic element of fire, in this modern day. Blessings are not only performed inside the temple; people bless themselves and make their prayers in the street, in public view. We often watch movies to escape our story and enter into someone else’s narrative.
