RITUAL HIVE | ALCHEMY + PRANA
FT. COLLINS, LINCOLN CENTER
INCITE/INSIGHT NOVEMBER2014-JANUARY 2015
The installation RITUAL HIVE is about the trajectories of transformation, the lines of intersection and the alchemy of honey. There is a certain ritual that the hive embodies as it collectively transforms pollen into honey. This installation of hexagon ceramic raku tiles, honey comb, 24K gold gilded lava rocks, mirrors, seeds, corn, video and sound collectively form a ritual space that speak to the geometry and complexity of alchemy, the molecular structures of the carbon age and the collective complex intelligence of hive mentality. Circumambulate the axis of the hive and witness transformation.
Contained within an 8 foot by 8 foot square there is a pathway that circles an inner hexagon that contains sound and video. The video loop is of the doorway to the hive – the comings and goings at the entry. From time to time you can spot the pollen on the feet of the incoming workers bringing the finest dust back from the heart of the flowers. The chaos at the door is humbling because it is so finely orchestrated.
This roundabout is a a mini parikrama (Sankrit translates as circumambulation) in homage to the cosmic geometry and profound organization of the hive and the alchemy of transformation that the hive represents, The hive is the elixer maker of sweetness – it is the ultimate ‘straw to gold’ collective. There is a communication and collective process, rich in form and architecture, complex in communication and focus on the whole. As the hive is a critical aspect to our own food chain it not only symbolizes our fragile connection to nature’s cycles but we are indeed reliant on sustaining their magical pollination of our food.
Enter into this circle and come to understand that you are indeed an inherent part of this cosmic cycle of life. Each of our trajectories intersect and create patterns that ripple out beyond our knowing.
